The Paradise-like Island
This tiny island of nearly 4 millions Hindus, surrounded by a sea of 180
millions Muslims, is just 2 kms from the eastern tip of Java. When the first
Dutch war-yacht pulled into Bali in the late 16th C., the whole crew immediately
jumped ship - it was heaven on earth. It took the captain 2 years to round up
his men before he could set sail back to Holland. Bali was really put on the map
back in 1930s when several popular documentaries were made about this paradise
like island.
Bali is like one big sculpture. every earthen is manicured and polished,
every field and niche is carving by hand. Once a geographic extension of Java,
Bali still resembles it, mountains and all, sharing much the same climate,
flora, and fauna as its mother island. There are few flat areas; hill and
mountains are every where.
