LOMBOK / NUSA TENGGARA
A fascinating experience for the hardy traveller, Nusa Tenggara is home to
hundreds of ethnic groups who speak scores of different languages and dialects
and hold widespread beliefs of magic. Flores and Sumba produces some of most
exquisite handwoven ikat in Indonesia. Another of the area's striking cultural
characteristics is great variety of adat culture; the Balinese style of temples
of Lombok, the shaggy, elliptical thatch houses of Timor, and the Sumbanese
native houses which resemble a gigantic straw hat. On Sumbawa megaliths are
carved in cryptic reliefs, and on Sumba massif stone-slab tombs sit in front
yards of houses. Astounding natural wonders include Komodo's of 3-m-long monitor
lizards, the colored volcanic lakes of Kelimutu, superlative snorkeling with
100-m drop-off on Flores, seashell collecting on Gili islands of Lombok, the
virgin game reserve of P. Moyo on Flores. The area is also rich in dances,
fighting arts, animist ceremonies, and unique religious holidays.

through terraced ricefield, coffee plantatioon, bamboo forest, across the river,
