The Isle of Gold

The gigantic island, 6th largest in the world, is 1,760 km long and up to 400 km wide. It accounts for a full 25% of the total Indonesian land area. With its grass huts, lake tribes, wildlife reserves, steamy jungles, swampy lowlands, swift clear rivers, spectacular waterfalls, crater lakes, and immense forest of canopied tropical trees, Called the "Isle of Hope" or the "Isle of Gold", this island's natural wealth is fabulous. Sumatera is like the Africa of South East Asia.

In mythical times, Sinbad the Sailor is said to have landed on an "extremely fertile island of abundance" off Sumatera where he met the "Old Man of the Sea". In the 1st AD, a Chinese emperor dispatched an expedition to Sumatera to procure a rhinoceros for the imperial zoo. With great diversity of tribes and numerous megalithic, aboriginal, and matriarchal societies, Sumatera is one of Southeast Asia's richest cultural areas - an ethnological gold mine.

  Leave for Bohorok via Binjai to see Orang Utan rehabilitation station at Bukit Lawang. Here they are trained to return their natural habitat. Afternoon leaving back for Medan.
